ALABAMA ASSOCIATION OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATORS (AAIE)
MISSION STATEMENT
The Alabama Association of International Educators (AAIE) holds at its key objective the promotion of international educational exchange of students and scholars in the State of Alabama. The AAIE aims to provide to its membership professional education and training, designed to strengthen and develop programs and services in international education throughout the state. The AAIE provides a forum for discussion of issues and a network for sharing information pertinent to international education. The AAIE holds that international exchange advances learning and scholarship, enhances respect and cooperation among the peoples of the world and encourages constructive leadership in a global community.
BY LAWS
Article I - NAME
The Name of the organization shall be the Alabama Association of International Educators (AAIE).
Article II- PURPOSE
The purpose or the Alabama Association of International Educators is to promote the advancement of international educational exchange in the state of Alabama. In order to meet fully the educational, social, and cultural needs of international students and scholars in the state, AAIE is committed to the following objectives:
- To develop and recommend professional and ethical standards, policies, and practices which are appropriate for international educational exchange.
- To provide professional development opportunities for the AAIE membership.
- To collect and disseminate relevant and pertinent information related to international educational exchange to the AAIE membership.
- To support, nurture, and enhance international education activities and practices at the local level, specifically to bring together those in the state of Alabama who are engaged or interested in the international exchange of students and scholars.
Article III - MEMBERSHIP
Section 1: Eligibility
Any person interested in the purposes of the association may apply for membership.
Section 2: Application
Membership is by application to the AAIE State Chair.
Section 3: Conferences/Administrative Fees
A ten-dollar ($10.) administrative fee shall be added to the estimated cost of the Annual Spring Conference of the organization and shall be charged to those members in attendance.
Dues may be determined by the executive board with the consent of a two-thirds majority of
those present at any annual meeting of the Association.
Article IV – OFFICERS
Section 1: Executive Board
The AAIE Executive Board shall consist or the following officers: a) AAIE State Chair; b) AAIE State Chair Elect: c) AAIE Past State Chair; d) Secretary; e) Treasurer; f) Communications Coordinator; g) the State Representative to NAFSA Region VII
Section 2: Duties
AAIE State Chair: The State Chair shall be the Chief Executive Officer of the organization. The State Chair shall preside at all meetings of the Executive Board and will discharge all official duties pertaining thereto. The State Chair shall oversee all disbursement of funds. The State Chair may form ad hoc committees and appoint committee members as needed.
AAIE Chair Elect: The Chair Elect, in coordination with the Past Chair and the State Chair, shall be responsible for the organization of the annual programs and meetings. In the absence of the State Chair, the Chair Elect will have executive authority.
AAIE Past Chair: The Past Chair will serve as consultant to the AAIE Executive Board.
Secretary: The Secretary shall maintain the records of the Association and notify members of meetings.
Treasurer: The Treasurer shall disburse funds with the approval of the State Chair and provide financial report at the AAIE annual conference in the spring.
Communications Coordinator: The Communications Coordinator shall coordinate communications between AAIE leadership and membership and manage promotion of AAIE events.
The State Representative to NAFSA shall be the liaison between AAIE and NAFSA and shall attend NAFSA Region VII conference to represent AAIE.
Section 3: Elections
The election of officers and state representatives shall take place at the annual spring meeting of the association. The Chair Elect shall be elected by members on an annual basis. The Secretary, Treasurer and Communications Coordinator shall be elected every two years. The State Representative shall be elected on a three-year basis.
Section 4: Nominating Committee
A nominating committee shall propose a slate of nominees for offices to be filled. Nominations will be taken from application over the internet and from the floor immediately prior to election.
The nominating committee shall be composed of the current Chair and immediate Past Chair.
Section 5: Disqualification or Resignation of an Officer
In the event that a current officer leaves the field of International Education or is no longer employed in the state of Alabama, the officer becomes disqualified from holding office in AAIE.
In the event that a current officer willingly or unwillingly takes actions deemed by a two-thirds (2/3) majority vote of the Executive Board to be harmful to the Association, the Executive Board may request the resignation to the officer.
Upon disqualification or removal of an officer, the remaining officers shall, by consensus, appoint a member to fill the remaining term of the resigning officer.
Article V – TERMS OF OFFICE
The AAIE State Chair will serve a term of three years: one year as Chair Elect, one year as Chair, and one year as Past Chair. Change in leadership will occur yearly at the State Conference in the spring.
The AAIE Chair Elect will serve a term of one year before becoming AAIE State Chair. The AAIE Chair Elect will be elected by majority vote of the AAIE membership during the annual State Conference in the spring. Candidates for election to Chair Elect will be identified by the AAIE Chair, members of the Executive Board, and the AAIE membership at-large prior to the election. Candidates may also be nominated from the floor prior to the election.
The AAIE State Past Chair will serve a term of one year following the two previous years as
Chair Elect and Chair.
The AAIE Secretary will serve a term of two years.
The AAIE Treasurer will serve a term of two years.
The AAIE Communications Coordinator will serve a term of two years.
The State Representative to NAFSA Region VII will serve a term of three years. Change of leadership will take place in the fall at the annual NAFSA Region VII Conference.
Article VI – MEETINGS
There shall be at least one meeting/conference of the Alabama Association of International Educators per year to be held during the spring. There shall be at least one additional meeting of the AAIE Executive Board per year usually held during the annual fall NAFSA Region VII Conference.
Article VII - CONSTITUTION
Section I: Adoption
The AAIE Constitution shall be adopted by a two-thirds (2/3) majority vote of the AAIE membership present at the Alabama State Conference held at Auburn, Alabama, May 2-3, 2002.
Section 2: Amendments
The AAIE Constitution may be amended by a two-thirds majority vote of the members present at the annual AAIE meeting. AAIE membership will be made aware of any proposed amendments at least 30 days prior to the meeting.
Article VIII – RATIFICATION
The AAIE membership and Executive Board hereby approve the by-laws of the Alabama Association of International Educators.

AAIE State Chair

Should have at least one year of full-time experience in international education in the state or Alabama
Must be currently working in International Education in the state of Alabama
Responsibilities:
Serve as Chief Executive Officer for AAIE
Call and lead all meetings for the AAIE and Executive Board representing the interests of international educators and community volunteers in Alabama
Serve as resource person for international educators in Alabama by raising awareness of opportunities for professional developments, services, participation, ethical practice, and funding available through NAFSA and AAIE
Foster the goals of international education
Appoint officers to the Executive Board as allowed under the AAIE Constitution, and provide oversight and supervision of Executive Board members
Serve as mentor to the AAIE State Chair Elect and work closely with the Executive Board
AAIE State Chair-Elect
Term:
One year
Appointment:
By nomination and election during the annual conference in the spring
Qualifications:
Should have at least one year of full-time experience in international education in the state of Alabama
Must be currently working in International Education in the state of Alabama
Qualifications:
Coordinate and preside over the annual conference in the spring
Assume the duties of State Chair in the absence of the Chair
Foster the goals of international education
AAIE Past State Chair
Term:
One year

By previous service as AAIE State Chair Elect and AAIE State Chair
Qualifications:
To have served as State Chair
Must be currently working in International Education in the state of Alabama
Responsibilities:
Serve as a resource person for international educators in Alabama and as a consultant to the Executive Board
Maintain a history of the Association
AAIE Secretary
Term:
Two years
Appointment:
By nomination and election during the annual conference in the spring
Qualifications:
Should have at least one year of full-time experience in international education in the state of Alabama
Must be currently working in International Education in the state of Alabama
Responsibilities:
Maintain the records and membership database
Coordinate conference registration
AAIE Treasurer
Term:
Two years
Appointment:
By nomination and election during the annual conference in the spring
Qualifications:
Should have at least one year of full-time experience in international education in the state of Alabama
Must be currently working in International Education in the state of Alabama
Responsibilities:
Provide financial report at the AAIE annual conference in the spring
Disburse funds with the approval on the State Chair and State Chair-Elect
Communications Coordinator

Should have at least one year of full-time experience in international education in the state of Alabama
Must be currently working in International Education in the state of Alabama
Responsibilities:
Serve as the webmaster and listserv and newsletter manager for AAIE
Coordinate communications between AAIE leadership and membership
Foster communication between the NAFSA Region VII and state in partnership with Alabama Representative to NAFSA Region VII
Manage promotion of annual conference and AAIE events
Alabama Representative to NAFSA Region VII
Term:
Three years
Appointment:
By nomination and election during the annual conference in the spring
Qualifications:
Should have at least one year of full-time experience in international education in the state of Alabama
Must be currently working in International Education in the state of Alabama
Responsibilities:
Serve as liaison to NAFSA Region VII and Study Alabama: A Consortium for Global Engagement and Economic Development (SA/CGEED).
Promote the interests of Alabama international educators and inform state members of important information related to NAFSA, international education, and advocacy for international education
Coordinate the State Meeting at the NAFSA Region VII Conference in the fall
Attend regional team training meetings
